From 1893 until 1966, the firm of Britains Limited manufactured hollow cast lead soldiers, delighting children and adults alike. Although founded as a novelty and toy manufacturing firm in 1845 by William Britain, Sr. the company came to age as the premiere led soldier manufacturer under the leadership of William Britain, Jr. (1870-1933). Britains produced the vast majority of its pieces in a scale of 54 millimeters, so that a six-foot tall man was represented by a toy figure just over two inches high.In 1997 Britains introduced the Circus Series which contained solid metal figures. This is a mint example Set No. 8668 Strong Man and Weights. "Bulging muscles, a gleaming shaven head and bristling moustache typify the archetypal strong man, complete with leopard skin leotard. The effort is etched on his face, but are those weights really a ton?" The box and shipping container are in mint condition; a full color Britains Circus brochure is included. This will make a nice gift for lovers of circuses, carnivals and side-shows; those who collect figures from The Second Golden Age of toy soldiers; an addition to the collection of those interested in entertainment and performers; dog and animal acts; and those who are interested in quality metal toy soldiers and Britains figures.
