This is a really unusual original handthrown ceramic mug. It was made by MICHAEL KENNEDY CERAMICS at his art studio pottery in Sligo, Ireland in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Michael Kennedy's work typically displays a unique maze of intricate patterns and colours, and this early example is no exception. The main colour is a subtle purple, with blues and yellow/sand, lightly glazed. The handle is in the form of a 'bell-bottom' trouser leg and shoe. On the front of the mug there is a three-dimensional head of a woman wearing a bonnet, with flowing hair made of delicate, fine, individual ceramic strands. To the side is the shape of a violin/fiddle, with musical notes impressed. The bottom of the mug is unglazed and is impressed with Michael Kennedy's mark, the stylised letters MK and S. The inside of the mug is blue and grey and is fully glazed. The mug is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is a very slight mark to the fine hair (approx 2mm), but this is barely noticeable and does not detract from the remarkable sculptural effect of this mug.The mug still has the original publicity leaflet from the studio in Sligo. It reads " Michael Kennedy is one of Ireland's foremost ceramic artists. His work is unique and original. Each piece is made by working on the form, layers of texture markings and drawings are applied, read more
