MILITARY Painting Oil ASHCAN WWII Relief at BASTOGNE 44 This is a fantastic 18" x 24" original oil on board signed "FmcG". It is very much in the Ash Can style and may very well have been done as an illustration in that manner which was common at the time. This could have used as an illustration in Stars and Stripes and this GI may have been a field artist. I could definitely imagine this being reproduced in sepia. I recently acquired this at the home of an old Korean War Vet who collected everything military including this. He told me he had this since the early '60's and the information he had was that this was a period piece done in 1944, as dated on the back. He did rewire it recently, but it came in this frame with the backing in place. The imagery is clearly defined in the picture showing the ferocity of the swift moving robust tanks passing the beleaguered infantry men in the foreground. The background in great contrast shows the ghostly mountain like ruins of a Cathedral in the Belgian town with strong brusque brush strokes. Overall the surface condition is excellent with a close-up photo showing a very minor spot of paint loss. The signature initials are clearly shown. I could find nothing about this artist and no date appears on the painted surface. Still by style and condition the age is apparent. Overall even just as read more
