Milton ''Milt'' Orville Thompson [born May 4, 1926 - died August 6, 1993] he was a NASA research pilot selected as an astronaut for the United States Air Force X-20 Dyna-Soar program. The program was later cancelled, and he was assigned as a pilot in the X-15 rocket plane program. In 1963, he became the first pilot to fly the lightweight NASA M2-F1 lifting body. The Lifting bodies were wingless vehicles designed to generate lift and stability from their shapes. He completed 47 flights in the lifting body, which resulted in data that helped develop the Space Shuttle. His next assignment was on the X-15 rocket plane. He was one of only 12 pilots to fly the X-15 rocket plane, and flew the X-15 14 times, reaching a maximum speed of 3712, mph and a altitude of 214,000 feet. After concluding his flying career, he became Chief of Research Projects, and in 1975, he was appointed Chief Engineer and held that position until his death in 1993.
