Like its four predecessors, The limited edition CD MIND BLOWERS Volume 16-Autumn In The Mid 60'S part 5 (Dr. Dream Ltd. 41 2008, 43 of 250) is a great compilation of rare 45’s released by U.S. pop/garage bands circa 1965-66. A continuation of Mind Blowers Volumes 3, 5, 9 & 12, Volume 16 features 33 great tracks in the style of what The Beatles/Byrds/Beau Brummels were doing at the time. Highlights include the beautiful Lying and Trying by Pennsylvania’s The Shillings, a lovely mid-tempo pop ballad from 1965 that features tight playing, excellent harmonies and production, wistful vocals and a beautiful melody. The Shillings cut 3 great 45s from early ‘65 thru late ‘66 (their 1st, Cry appears on Mind Blowers Vol.12). Lying and Trying is the B-side of their Three Rivers label 45. The A-side is an excellent version of Children and Flowers, the song The Critters had a hit with. Before the Critters moved to Kapp Records and perfected the soft pop style they would be identified with, they cut a number of sides for various NY labels that were more influenced by the Beatles and the British Invasion. No One But You, the very rare single they cut for NY label Prancer is a beat driven gem very similar in sound and style to what The Beau Brummels were doing on their first 2 albums. Brilliantly produced by the band, this equals any of the best music released in 1965. If You Knew by Thor’s Hammer is a track from the rare 4 song EP they released in 1966. A real uptempo song, it kicks right out of the gate with an excellent guitar riff similar to The Beatle’s I Feel Fine and just builds in intensity from t Another song featuring great use of dynamics and harmonies, the melody will be floating in your head for days. Out of Birmingham, Alabama, The Candy Store Prophets (not the Boyce/Hart band) cut one great 45 for Cougar Records in 1966, You’re A Teaser b/w The Time of Day. Teaser is a moody mid tempo ballad with great lyrics, harmonies and tight playing. The Time of Day is the more uptempo of the two and features an excellent vocal and great guitar throughout Both songs resemble the sound and style of much of side one of Beatles 65.The Other Tikis were originally just the Tikis. and were label mates of The Beau Brummels on Autumn Records. Featuring Ted Templeman, later of Harper’s Bazaar and a producer of some excellent late 60s West Coast music, they added Other to their moniker and cut the great Bye Bye Bye, their swansong and best single in 1966. Riding on a pulsating, driving beat, lead and background vocals intricately weave the melody through cool changes and modulations, brilliantly produced and performed. Losing much of their frat boy leanings by 1966, The Fabulous Wailers threw themselves wholeheartedly into the Byrds/Beatles thing and recorded the great Outburst album. I Want To Walk With You and My Girl are two outstanding rock and roll songs from Outburst that show that the muscle is still t in spades. The guitar playing is outstanding and tasteful on both songs, the melodies and harmonies near perfect and the beat is always in your face. If you’re only familiar with their earlier output, these songs are a gonna be a minor revelation.The Cindermen cut some cool garage singles but by 1965 they were also under the Beatles 65 spell. I Think of You combines Eight Days A Week with I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party to exciting results. Another first rate pop song that transcends the obvious influences. A great band out of Pine Bluffs, Arkansas, The Chaps cut a number of excellent 45s until the late 60s for various labels. Forget Me and Remember To Forget Her are both A-sides of their first 2 singles on Paula Records. Both are perfect records that combine the best elements of garage, jangle and Beatles into a perfect pop confection.The New Order were another cool East Coast band (Connecticut) who cut 3 outstanding singles for Warner Bros.
