Miner's Brass Match Case. Purchased at auction with a lot of mining oil wick lamps and tools. This was included with a box of oil wick lamps purchased several years ago. Beautifully made and very unusual. At first glance, I thought it was for carrying lamp oil. It appears to be liquid tight; but it actually still contained a few wooden friction matches. It could have probably been used for lamp oil; but it couldn't hold more than 1 1/2 or 2 ounces of fuel. T is a lanyard fitting on the side with two brass chains. The smaller chain connects to the cap. The larger chain has a metal tab on the end. The tab has cross hatching; and no doubt, it's a striking surface for matches. I have some similar match cases; but they have a striking surface on the side of the case. Measures about 3 inches long X 1 inch in diameter. The cap is on the edge as opposed to the middle of the case. This allows a match to be removed by holding the case horizontally and just tapping on the side. Still in beautiful condition. No real blemishes to speak of; since it was probably carried in a pocket and never subjected to alot of wear. T is wear on the tab with the striking surface; but the crosshatching is still quite visible. This is an unusual find in great condition. A great addition to any oil wick lamp collection.
