Lovely antique miniature painting of the Duchess of Devonshire, based om the work of Thomas Gainsborough. It is signed, but I can't read the signature. The frame itself measures 13 cm-11 cm or 5.1 in-4.3 inch. The inner frame measures 9 cm-7 cm or 3.5 in-2.8 inch. The oval frame and base of the painting are all natural material, pre-war II ivory. On the back underneath the written number and "Duchess of Devonshire" the label very faded reads "elfen bein" which is the German word for this material. The paper on the back is also old German. As this is an antique and natural material there are lines or cracks running through the material but the state is still very good and would make a lovely feature on any wall. The miniature painting is behind glass and in wonderful condition. I think you call it a gouache, but I'm not sure. Information about Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (7 June 1757 – 30 March 1806): formerly Lady Georgiana Spencer , was the first wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Her father, the 1st Earl of Spencer, was a great-grandson of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. The most famous descendant of her family is of course Diana, Princess of Wales, née Spencer.
