Old Miniature Portrait Duchess Devonshire Gainsborough

Sold Date: 02/13/2011

Lovely antique miniature painting of the Duchess of Devonshire, based om the work of Thomas Gainsborough.

It is signed, but I can't read the signature. The frame itself measures 13 cm-11 cm or 5.1 in-4.3 inch. The inner frame measures 9 cm-7 cm or 3.5 in-2.8 inch.

The oval frame and base of the painting are all natural material, pre-war II ivory. On the back underneath the written number and "Duchess of Devonshire" the label very faded reads "elfen bein" which is the German word for this material. The paper on the back is also old German. As this is an antique and natural material there are lines or cracks running through the material but the state is still very good and would make a lovely feature on any wall. The miniature painting is behind glass and in wonderful condition. I think you call it a gouache, but I'm not sure.

Information about Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (7 June 1757 – 30 March 1806): formerly Lady Georgiana Spencer , was the first wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Her father, the 1st Earl of Spencer, was a great-grandson of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. The most famous descendant of her family is of course Diana, Princess of Wales, née Spencer.

I live in The Netherlands, I'll ship worldwide (but only Paypal please unless you are Dutch or from another European country), but please WAIT till I send you an invoice. Ebay is requiring to include the shipping charges in listings, but as everyone knows, there is is not just one way tot do this and much depends on where you live.

To give an example of the lowest Dutch prices for a parcel (not insured) up to 2 kg like this one:

Most of Europe like England (please tell me first your country) €8.70 or 11.82 US dollars

But for example Ireland is €9,50 (12.90 USD), and Norway, Switserland €10.30 (14 USD)

Rest of the world USA/Japan etc.: €17.10 or 23.25 US dollars

These are the lowest prices, if you want insured shipping, it will be more, but that would be your own decision.

Another thing: I like to recycle as there's too much waste in this world and I don't like hidden charges. I don't charge any extra: what you pay for shipping is what I pay for shipping. For me it's just as important that the pieces arrive safely from my home to your home, so I take time and good materials to pack it. Relatively new to Ebay I like to keep my 100% history! If you have questions, about the item, or about shipping etc., before ór afterwards, please contact me!

To international customers: I can't be responsible for import duties, taxes, and charges, they are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/ buying. These charges are normally collected by the shipping company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.
