Mining~Blasting~1880s~Miners~Dynamite Poke~Spoon~Drills COMPLETE SET OF 4 MINERS HAND DRILLING DYNAMITE TOOLS This is an original set of four 1880s "MINERS DYNAMITE LOADING SPOON~DYNAMITE POKE AND HAND DRILLS. These are usually only found underground in abandon mines and these four were recently found on the 600 foot level of the famous Waterloo Mine (1881-1896) in Calico, California. I have been mapping the underground workings of the Waterloo Mine and others in the Calico mining district for the last five years. In the 1880s when drilling was done by hand the miners drilling tools consisted of one four side bull point and a long two sided chisel bit. The rare bull point drill was used to start the drill holes and you only find one of these underground for every fifty chisel bits. The miners spoon was used to clean out the drill holes before inserting the dynamite. The miner would insert the spoon with the bowl up until he reached the end of the hole. He would then turn the spoon 180 degrees thus trapping the loose rock and pulling it out of the hole. The other end has a four sided point to break up small chunks of rock. When the drilling was done the miner would insert the sticks of dynamite with the wood powder poke and tamp them in firm.
