This Sake set has never been used and is in mint condition, no chips, cracks or any damage. Arita pottery with any imperfections are destroyed immediately and do not go on the market. During the seventeenth century Japanese porcelain was primarily Arita blue & white. This set was purchased by my mother in Japan in the early 1980's. The sake pitchers are approximately 5-1/2 inches tall by 2-1/2 inches at widest diameter. The cups are approximately 2-1/2 inches diameter and 1-1/8 inch in height. Arita ware is the name for porcelain coming from the area of Arita. Arita ware is best known as Arita blue and white porcelain. Arita Blue & White ware is characterized by a typical inky underglaze blue and elegant, often lively patterns. The general term for porcelain in white and underglaze blue is Sometsuke. The figures on these Arita pieces are very playful and whimsical. This set was well over $100 when she purchased it and came in a wooden box. We have many Japanese items to sell and hope to include the box but need to locate the correct one. We are not certain we can find it but will try. Good luck bidding. This is the finest quality porcelain available in Japan. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions. Some of the photos appear to make the pitchers look crooked......they are perfectly straight with tops perfectly centered.
