Beautiful SMS meerschaum pipe of ram running, with florals-Signed by Master Carver Salim! Meerschaum is a soft opaque mineral of white or grey color r anking at about 2 on the Mohs Scale . The first recorded use of meerschaum for making pipes was around 1723 and quickly became prized as the perfect material for providing a cool, dry, flavorful smoke. The porous nature of meerschaum draws moisture and tobacco tar into the stone. Incredible detail can be carved into meerschaum, and this pipe is a great example. Lavish and intricate leaves and florals surround the entire bowl, and a mature bighorn ram with large, ridged horns is carved in an unusual running position, around the front of the bowl. a complicated and difficult setting, but easily handled by Master Carver Salim, one of SMS' most legendary carvers. His signature is prominent on the left side, near where the meerschaum attached to the dark amber Lucite stem. Unsmoked, 6" long, bowl 2-1/2" deep, 7/8" wide. This pipe is truly in mint condition. It comes in the original custom-fitted box of black leather, lined with yellow velvet. A fine addition to your collection, either as a smoking pipe, or as a lovely little bit of Turkish sculpture!
