A rare Minton tile planter the patinated brass frame mounted with four Minton Arthurian Legend tiles designed by John Moyr Smith, impressed marks to tiles, frame cast W T & S 21cm. high The 6" tiles depict scenes from arthurian legends - Excalibur , Gareth , Guinevere and Geraint Literature , Annamarie Stapleton John Moyr Smith Richard Dennis Publications page 43 figure 73 for a comparable planter This item weighs in at 3kgs unpackaged WT&S), W. Tonks & Sons , 3, Hill Street, woodscrew maker (S1770) then 43 Deritend, steel toy maker (PR1780), Cheapside, Birmingham, then 201, Moseley Street, Birmingham making cast and wrought brass products. Manufacturer of architectural hardware, art metalware, campaign metalware, ecclesiastical metalwork and an early fabricator of decorative patterned tubes. The Tonks family surname is the lists of Birmingham brassfounders before the 1800s. William Tonks founded this firm in 1789 (or 1794?). They won gold medals at the 1851 and 1862 Exhibitions in London and in 1855 at Paris The larger factory in Moseley Street was opened in the early 1860s and most items now found will date from after this time. ( By 1869 they had developed the eight-pointed 'sun' trade mark showing two eyes and a mouth. Later the 'WT&S' initials were sometimes inserted instead for the marks on some items but other items had a smaller, empty sun on items designed in the 1900s. each tile has the impressed Mintons , China Works , Stoke on Trent with the stamp to the reversethe brass work is without damage and has a very good colour , 1 minor chip to the rear of 1 tile is all we can state , this in no way detracts from a very fine listing , picture 5 shows the area Terms and Conditions , Please ReadPLEASE NOTE , Parcel Force and other mail companies will not insure any items made with or containing glass or ceramics , please note we will remove glass if requested from picture frames , we have over the years sent well over 200 pictures worldwide and only thrice has damage happened to the glass , please ensure that you are aware of these conditions which are published by the mail companies ..
