This auction is for a Modern 1/2 plate (4 1/2" by 5 1/2") Ambrotype of the the Rear portion of the 1846 Ministry Shop at the Shaker Village of South Union, Kentucky.Within this building the Ministry lived and worked.In the Background may be seen a portion of the 1824 Center house. The Shaker Village of South Union is Located in Logan County, Kentucky, one of the most beautiful and fertile regions in the state. Founded in 1807 and closed in 1922,the village was at its peak prior to the Civil War when it encompassed 6,000+ acres and over 200 buildings.The South Union Shakers were famous for the quality of their Garden Seeds,Fruit Preserves,Brooms,Silk and other products sold to the "World".Unfortunately the Civil War had a profound effect on the village as it was under Confederate Occupation from Sept 1861 to Feb. 1862 and Union Occupation for the rest of the war. It is estimated that over 100,000 Solider's North and South were to pass through the village, requesting countless meals of the wonderful Shaker food,taking horses and livestock,burning fences, etc... the village would never fully recover. Today the site is a Museum/Living History site dedicated to preserving Kentucky's Shaker Heritage.It is Located 15 Miles South of Bowling Green and well worth visiting if you are in the area.
