Modern Brewery Magazine – February 1935 – Conover-Mast Publication – East Stroudsburg , Pa. This issue has 92 pages of historical photos, articles and advertising from the brewing and related industries. The cover asks the question “Can Brewers Stand Prosperity?” It goes on to say, “A nationally know publisher said to an important government official, “When you give some brewers an inch they take a mile.” In the March 1935 issue of the same magazine, which is in another of my listings with eBay, there is a letter on page 74, from Frederick C. Zobel, addressing that statement. The Editorial asks, Are You Paying for Idle Time”. “Hornung Looks Ahead” is a nice article about the Jacob Hornung Brewing Co. of Philadelphia with 3 photos. One of these shows the front of the plant with “Home of White Bock” above the entrance and a White Bock Café sign next door. “Schaefer’s All-Star Radio Party” was broadcast over 8 New York radio staions from the F & M Schaefer Brewing Co. It was a benefit for the unemployed musicians fund and featured the likes of Jack Benny, Morton Downey, Pickens Sisters, Kostelanetz Orchestra and many others. “Brewery Instrumentation” has photos of a variety of instruments including a temperature control device from the Ebling Brewing Co. “ Hamm ’s Brewery Uses Safety Training to Build Good Will” has a variety of photos from the St. Paul plant. “A Highly Efficient Fleet of Trucks” has photos of an American Brewery, Baltimore delivery truck and a beer keg truck; a fleet of Minneapolis Brewing Co. delivery trucks; a Christian Feigenspan Brewing Co., Newark , delivery truck; and a Goebel Brewing Co. delivery truck. “Fisher Brewery Spurs Trade by Advertising”, is a 2 page article with 3 photos about the Fisher Brewing Co. of Salt Lake City, Utah . “How Ruppert’s Cooperate With the Industry” features advertising from Ruppert’s Brewery in a variety of foreign languages. “ Men Whom You Know” has a brief biography and a sketch by H. Russin of William Piel, president of Piel Bros. Brewing Co., Brooklyn , N.Y. “ Famous Brewmasters of America” has short biographies and photographs of Fred G. Slawson of the Commercial Brewing Co., Boston; Julius Cabisius of the Roger Williams Brewing Co., Providence; and John G. Broomfield of the Waterbury Brewing Co. “The Diesel Makes Good in a Brewery” talks about the $11,000 annual savings at the Holacker Brewing Co. plant in Allentown, Pa. “News of the Industry” has about 15 pages of bits of very informative news from breweries across the country. Some of these include: John Theophiles Elected President of August A. Bush Co. of Texas; Hoffman Introduces English Ale; Mexicans Invited to Master Brewers’ Convention; Pfeiffer Produces Millionth Case; California to Have Two New Breweries; Humboldt Brewery Declares Dividend; New Brewery at Roxbury Crossing; Adam C. Wagner Dies; New Brewery for Idaho Falls; New Beer Out in New Orleans; Gilbert Brewery, Virginia City, Montana to Reopen; Alaskan Brewery Moves Ashore; Falls City Brewery Completes Modernization Program; Large Malt Plant Due for Vancouver, Wa.; Herman Berghoff Dies; Utah is to Have New Brewery; and many more. Some of the advertisers include: Liquid Brewers’ Machinery; Crown cork and Seal Co.; St. Louis Cooperage Co.; Littleford Bros. Brewery Equipment (German Brewing Co., Cumberland, Maryland mash tub); Freyn Engineering Co. (Lauter Tub at Lieber Brewing, Indianapolis); Fuller Company Airveyor (Ebling’s plant); Hutchinson Crowns, Flavors and Supplies; Hackney Steel Tank Co.; Bishopric’s Brewery Coatings; Cream City Chemical Works; Armstrong’s Cork Insulation (Hoffman Brewery, Newark beer bottle); Hinde & Dauch Beer Cases ( Sebewaing Brewing Co. Old Style Beer case); Yundt Bottle Washers (Goebel Brewing Co. plant with cases and testimonial letter); Monarch Filters ( Monarch Brewing Co., Chicago letter); Taylor Instruments (Hoffman plant); Wittemann Brewery Engineers (Washington Breweries, Columbus, Ohio beer bottle) and many others.
