The essay on Mogens Ballin in the Brohan Museum's catalogue, "Modern Art Of Metalwork, State Musueum of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism (1889-1939), Berlin," has this to say abou Mogens Ballin's place in the history of modern Danish design: "Mogens Ballin's metal workshop was widely recognized, especially in Germany after the 'Nordic Art Exhibition," organized in Krefeld in 1902 by Friedrich Deneken, director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Mogens Ballin can be regardes as one of the founder personalities of modern Danish metalwork, for he elevated the status of the baser metals in the arts and crafts, above all for pewter, and thus significantly influenced the country's second greatest pewterer in this early period, Just Andersen." A very simple design, the vase is typical of Ballin's work. The production year for this piece was 1919, five years after Ballin's untimely death. The vase measures Four & One-Quarter [ 4.25 ] inches in height. Or about 11.00 Cms. Its mouth is Five & Three-Quarters [ 5.75 ] inches in diameter. Or, 13.50 Cms. At its mouth, the vase meaures Eighteen [ 18.00 ] inches in circumference. Or, 46.00 Cms. The piece is in excellent condtion. No dents or dings. The surface spotting is not pitting. Rather, I believe it results from the application of a lacquer finish at the time the vase was made in the Hertz workshop in Copenhagen. I have discovered that lacquering was quite common with metal objects in the early years of the 20th century, something I had been unaware of when I first began collecting. Lacquer, of course, tends to degrade over the decades, so it would be perfectly appropriate to have it replaced. The spotting can all either be simply polished out, and the color and texture of the piece will more nearly resemble the examples of Ballin's work in the Brohan Catalogue, or the lacquer can be removed, the piece polished, and a new lacquer finish applied. The latter procedure should be performed by a metals smith. The exterior surface feels perfectly smooth when touched. The interior surface is rough, but I believe this is a consequence of water having been placed in the vase over the last 88 years. The piece is well marked with the Ballin Hertz Ligature.
