Monogrammed OLD ImpressionistDocked Boats Oil Painting Att. Francis Clark Brown (1908-1992) No Reserve and a .77 Opening bid! Currently, I am having my Presidents' Day "No Guts...No Glory Sale." The "guts" part (or stupidity, as some would claim) of this sale is thatI am offering several old paintings by well documented artists,with no reserves and just .77 opening bids. The "glory" part of this sale is that the winning bidders will not onlyhave acquired a painting, but also a piece of history paintedby some of America's important, deceased artists.Furthermore, all of the paintings are 100% guaranteed, as described! This painting was originally purchased from a major auction house. During the beginning of the 20th century, The Gruppe School (founded by Emile Albert Gruppe (1896-1978) located at Gloucester, Massachusetts), trained a lot of great artists, including Francis Clark (Townley) Brown.Having seen another one of Brown's harbor paintings (Brunk's lot 625, 4/10/04), I feel there are many striking similarities, including the color palette, technique and horizon lines. If you have a chance to view Brunk's painting, I'll let you decide which painting you prefer. Additionally, I believe there is a chance (speculative) that the painting is indistinctly monogrammed "FB", on the lower left (4th digital image, 2nd column). If you are unfamiliar with Francis Clark Brown , I would like to share his biography from "AskART" with you: BIOGRAPHY and REFERENCES: " Francis Clark Brown (1908-1992) Francis Clark Brown was an impressionist painter of still lifes and landscapes and a muralist. He was born in Nashville, Indiana on August 7, 1908, and died in New Sharon, Iowa on October 12, 1992. He was a member of the Brown County Art Guild and the Indiana Artists Club.He graduated from Kokomo High School and studied art at the John Herron School of Art; Purdue University; Fuller School of Art, St. Ives, England; and Gruppe School, Gloucester, Massachusetts. His teachers included William Forsyth, Clifton Wheeler, Oakley Richey, Al Hibbard, Paul Hadley, Eliot O'Hara, and Emile Gruppe. He exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC.; New Kirk Gallery, St. Ives, England 1952; the Hoosier Salon where he won prizes in 1949, 56-58, 76; the Richmond Artists Association 1957, 65, 66, 71, 82; Indiana State Fair 1934, 39; and Anderson Art Society, 1936. He was a pastor of Society of Friends (Quakers) for twenty-five years. He had a gallery where he sold his paintings in Nashville at the corners of Gould and Jefferson, and he referred to this intersection as Paint Brush Corner. Of his work, he said: "Paintings are for the eyes to see, the heart to enjoy and to add an extra portion of adventure to life." Nashville, IN" ITEM DESCRIPTION: This oil on board measures 19,25" by 23,25", with its' frame. The actual painting measures 16" by 20". As stated above, I believe there is a chance (speculative) that the painting indistinctly monogrammed "FB", on the lower left. Please review the digital image that I have included of this area and make an informed decision. It is the 4th digital image, 2nd column.The painting is in good, overall condition. Along the extreme edges of the painting, there is some missing paint. The areas of missing paint extends approximately 1/8" out from the edge and is very minor. Additionally, the back of the painting has accumalated numerous scuffs, scratches and other blemishes over the years.
