So, the smart time to buy is now.Offered for your consideration is a genuine MONT BLANC Meisterstück No. 146 fountain pen, made in Germany c.1974. The name Meisterstück ("masterpiece") has been used by MONT BLANC since the 1920's for their high-end writing instruments and this 146 was skillfully crafted of precious resin in black with gold-plated trim and solid 14K gold nib.As you may know, the 146 and even larger 149 were introduced c.1949 as MONT BLANC's Post-War flagship pens. From what I've read, production of the 149 has continued uninterrupted while the 146 was taken out of their lineup sometime in the early-to-mid 1960's and reintroduced in the early 1970's. Above, you'll notice an excerpt from the 1973 MONT BLANC German-language catalog that I've included for model reference. And, though we know it was made in West Germany, this early reintroduction example bears no such marking that I could find. Anyways, please see the large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this superb MONT BLANC fountain pen is suitable for your collection.This No. 146 is in very clean, outstanding condition. There are no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches or anything other than the lightest signs of usage on the finish; and by lightest I mean visible only when magnified with a loupe. Plus, the bluish-gray ink window is very clear, I didn't notice any wear to the gold plated trim, the clip rests firmly against the cap, and the cap and barrel threads engage perfectly. The pen measures 5⅝" long with cap on, a full 6¼" with cap posted atop, and ⅝" diameter at its widest. Though it's a bit smaller than MONT BLANC's 149, the 146 is still quite a large pen. Shining brilliantly, this Meisterstück 146 simply looks and feels great!Most importantly, the solid 14K gold nib is in perfect shape. It appears to be a fine point but is not marked so I can't be positive. The pen hadn't been used in many years so I gave it a thorough cool water rinsing to free the cap, nib, feed, and piston filler of residual ink. This also gave me an opportunity to draw water into the mechanism--gently turning the blind filler cap counterclockwise until the piston reaches the bottom of the ink window; turning it back clockwise to the 'lock' position will pull ink--water in my test during cleaning, which it filled without fail--into the window reservoir. I should mention that the piston is a bit stiff on the down-stroke due to prolonged inactivity, and perhaps the recent cleansing, but that should work itself out with repeated inking.Lastly, I haven't written with this pen but did have the pleasure of using another 146 some years back. These pens have ample mass, terrific balance, and feel superb to write with! And, though the original box is long gone, the pen will be packaged with the utmost of care to ensure safe arrival.
