Most likely made in their shop in the area of Pleasant Gardens between Asheville and Marion , NC during the 1930's, this 15" beauty is the largest example of this design I've ever encountered. Prized by collectors for both Auby's expert turning and Maude's remarkable artwork, this design is most often seen on small tablewares such as cream pitchers, sugar bowls, cups, saucers and small bowls or vases. Rendered masterfully in white, green and brown colored slip applied in relief to the golden hued clay, Maude's artistry on this one certainly does the North Carolina state flower proud! James states, "The family most responsible for the Catawba art pottery movement was the Hiltons...," and one need look no farther than this piece for corroboration of his viewpoint. The vase is in very good to excellent condition with light overall read more
