This monumental vase was handthrown by Ernest Auburn (Auby) Hilton and decorated by his wife, Clara Maude Hilton, with her famous dogwood design. Most likely made in their shop in the area of Pleasant Gardens between Asheville and Marion , NC during the 1930's, this 15" beauty is the largest example of this design I've ever encountered. Prized by collectors for both Auby's expert turning and Maude's remarkable artwork, this design is most often seen on small tablewares such as cream pitchers, sugar bowls, cups, saucers and small bowls or vases. The piece is unsigned, as are many of the Hilton's wares, but the attribution is indisputable. Similar examples are pictured in both A. Everette James' North Carolina Art Pottery, 1900-1960 and North Carolina Pottery, The Collection of the Mint Museums , edited by Barbara Stone Perry. The dogwood decoration alone spans nearly 12 inches on this magnificent vase. Rendered masterfully in white, green and brown colored slip applied in relief to the golden hued clay, Maude's artistry on this one certainly does the North Carolina state flower proud! James states, "The family most responsible for the Catawba art pottery movement was the Hiltons...," and one need look no farther than this piece for corroboration of his viewpoint. The vase is in very good to excellent condition with light overall crazing to the crushed glass over-glaze, an old 3/4 inch chip on the base, a 3 inch firing or drying crack on the base which occurred at the time of manufacture, and a small bit of excess clay adhering to the inside bottom (see pictures). I find no other chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs or damage. The inside is remarkably clean and glossy, with no evidence of use. The base and top opening are over 5 inches in diameter, and vase diameter at the shoulder is 7 inches. I've included one picture with a 9 inch Cole Rebecca pitcher (not included or offered for sale in this auction) for size comparison/scale. This massive, yet elegant, vase displays beautifully and is truly a rare and wonderful find for the advanced collector of Hilton or other Catawba Valley Pottery, North Carolina Art Pottery or early 20th Century Southern or American folk art. No reserve and the usual low opening bid. Good luck bidding, and if you have any questions or need additional pictures, please e-mail. As always, if the purchaser is dissatisfied for any reason, the item may be returned in its original condition at the purchaser's expense within seven days for a full refund of the purchase price. THANKS TO A KIND EBAYER AND DESCENDANT OF THE HILTONS FOR POINTING OUT THAT THIS PIECE MAY, IN FACT, HAVE BEEN CREATED PRIOR TO THE MOVE TO PLEASANT GARDENS. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR THEIR ENTIRE MESSAGE. THANKS, JIMMY
