Outstanding and Possibly Unique Six-Gallon Red Wing Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Heron Decoration, Inscribed "OHiO," Minnesota origin, circa 1880, beehive-form jug with tooled shoulder and two applied handles. Decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt design of a heron or other marsh bird, depicted with a long striped neck, upswept tail, and long legs, beside a Red Wing-style flower. Inscribed in large letters across the shoulder "OHiO". Reverse decorated with an elaborate floral motif below the number 6. A wonderfully-decorated example of Red Wing stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, collected in the Midwest several decades ago. Fry to cobalt. Chip to top of rim on reverse. H 18".
