This is a 5.5", original Moon Jellyfish sculpture by artist Richard Satava. It is signed by the artist on the bottom. Piece is in perfect condition.3" lit base available for $25. Will add on at time of invoicing.BiographyRichard Satava was introduced to glassblowing in 1969 while at Ocean High School in Pacifica, California. He subsequently studied art and glassblowing at the College of San Mateo and California State University, Chico. As important as the skills that he learned while taking courses, was the experience he received at California State University, Chico by being a technician for their glass shop. In 1977, he established his own Northern California glass studio called Satava Art Glass. The art glass that Richard Satava creates is based in nature themes and motifs. When first starting out in the late '70s, he mostly worked in the art nouveau technique, like many, because that was the accepted art glass style at that time. Just a few years later his work took off into a different direction, incorporating more of his own style, creating new looks in pictorial nature scenes with designs like the Harvest Moon and Mt. Shasta Series. Continuing this theme he also created various floral lines, as well as, a Series depicting images of Native American drawings. All of these designs have evolved throughout the '80s and '90s and continue to be created with new colors, shapes and inspiration. During most of the 1990s, he started to focus more attention on ocean life and nautical themes, creating the Moon Jellyfish and Nautilus Series. Stemming from a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which enabled him to view Pacific Coast jellyfish in an exceptional setting, much like viewing art at a gallery, he knew then that he needed to capture the nature of the jellyfish in glass. After spending three years experimenting with various formulas to achieve the translucent colors needed to make the jellyfish, finally by 1995 the Series was ready for display. The Moon Jellyfish fast became one of his most successful creations and since that time has been displayed and sold all over the country by various galleries and aquariums. The following year, still fascinated with the ocean kingdom, he began working on a new design, which features the image of a nautilus on a vase or flask form with a background of earth and ocean tones. The life and nature of the ocean has always held amazement for Richard and because of this will continue to be an inspirational resource for the art glass he creates. Below is a brief description of some of his most popular and well known designs... Harvest Moon Series is exceptionally appealing, featuring a graceful tree that frames a shimmering full moon. Trees also serve as the theme for his Mt. Shasta Series, which depicts mountainous pine forests. Petroglyph Series draws inspiration from cave drawings and other pictorial representations of ancient tribes throughout the world from drawings found in France, Spain, North Africa and North American native tribes. The Floral Series depicts flowers such as Iris, Poppy, Lilies and Rock Rose using a broad array of vivid colors. The Moon Jellyfish Series portrays these ethereal creatures in solid clear sculptures. The Nautilus Series casts the image of a nautilus shell onto numerous layers of rich colors giving an impression of the depths of the ocean floor. Satava uses ancient techniques to create original designs in handblown glass vases, bowls, perfume vials, paperweights, sculptures and other works. He designs and creates each one of a kind piece, all from glass that he has formulated and made himself. Through his own exclusive color formulas, he is able to create rich arrays of colors by blending various metallic oxides such as silver, cobalt, selenium, cadmium and others into the molten glass.
