The "MINTON ETCH & GOLD ENCRUSTATION" was applied by MORGANTOWN/ECONOMY GLASS from the 1920's - 1960's. The name of this company was changed several times over the years - from 1903-1929 it was known as the ECONOMY GLASS COMPANY, and, tafter, as MORGANTOWN GLASS WORKS, followed by MORGANTOWN GLASS GUILD. A word regarding the MINTON etch with gold band. At one time, it was thought that once this etch was spotted on a piece of glassware, that the item had to have been manufactured by TIFFIN GLASSMASTERS in Ohio. However, with new information being published, t is no doubt that, in addition to the THREE TIFFIN Minton Versions, WHEELING DECORATING(2 versions, dubbed "swirls, arrows & flowers"), LOTUS/GLASTONBURY DECORATING(named "improved minton"), MORGANTOWN/ECONOMY GLASS(called "border decoration#25"), and, FOSTORIA(called "regent") produced variations of this etch/decoration. The important point about the WHEELING & LOTUS Minton variants, is that they did not manufacture their own glass but, puchased blanks from various glassmakers, and, as such, their versions could appear on glassware made by many other elegant glassware makers, including Tiffin and Morgantown. Of course, at times, Tiffin and Morgantown applied one of their own Minton etch/gold overlay versions to their own glass. It appears that most of the blanks that WHEELING & LOTUS used came from: DUNCAN&MILLER, CAMBRIDGE, FOSTORIA, IMPERIAL GLASS, NEW MARTINSVILLE, CENTRAL GLASS, HEISEY, FOSTORIA, LANCASTER/STANDARD, MORGANTOWN, TIFFIN & PADEN CITY. So, if a Minton etch/decoration is identified as the Wheeling or Lotus version, then the next job would be to identify the maker of the glass, if this is possible. In the case w the Minton etch/decoration is a version from TIFFIN or MORGANTOWN, then it is believed that these variants can only appear on their own glassware and not on glass made by other glassware makers. In this auction, we offer a lot of TWO Morgantown/Economy #9715 4 1/2" high by 3" wide optic tumblers and TWO 5" high by 4" wide at the bowl long slim stemmed optic saucer champagnes, all four with the MORGANTOWN MINTON decoration. They are in Excellent Condition without any cracks, chips, nicks or stains; with little apparent use - the gold on the champagnes is pristine - bit of wear on the top edge of the top rims of the tumblers. We identified the Morgantown decoration by checking the petals on the flower ornament, and, the swirl around the flower ornament(this ornament being part of the repeating design of an arrowhead/swirl and flower/swirl) - the Morgantown version is typified by the flower having 6 petals; or, the flower has 8 petals with one at the at the 12 o'clock position, and, t are 2 "fingers" on the swirl around the flower. These stems are tough to get described correctly, however, we guarantee these four goblets/tumblers to be genuine original Mogantown/Economy products with their Minton border decoration #25. REF: SNYDER'S Morgantown Glass-Depression Era through the 1960's(1998); tumbler lin# 9715 is pictured on pg. 76; FLORENCE'S Stemware identification Guide(1997), Morgantown/Economy Minton version is shown on pg. 107. As we get on in years, we have ceased our stamp collecting activities, and now, we will be liquidating over 300 pieces of antique glassware that we have accumulated over the past five years. Even more of an inititive is the fact that our Bride of 40 years has indicated that I need to stop my compulsive buying of glassware and sell the stuff that fills up my garage and another room, if I want to make it to 41 years. So, we will move on to new compulsions such as woodworking and fishing.
