Tolliver is, perhaps, one of the most respected folk artists to have emerged from the American South in the 20th century. After a massive injury that saw Tolliver's legs crushed and useless, Tolliver took up painting. After many years of painting and becoming a local favorite in Montgomery, Alabama, Mose T. caught the attention of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, where an exhibit of the artist's work was held in 1981. Later, his work was featured in the landmark exhibition of Black American Folk Art in Washington D.C.'s Corcoran Gallery. He would have subsequent exhibits at the Smithsonian American Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia College of Art. Work measures 9 x 18.5 inches. Medium: paint on wood board. Subject: Mose told me it was an "opossum". SIGNED. Condition: very good original condition. I grew up in Montgomery, AL and made several visits to Mose T's home to purchase his paintings. If memory serves me correctly, this one was purchased in 1984 for a discount because I took him a six-pack of beer. Anyone who knew Mose, knew this was a favorite item for exchange! It breaks my heart to part with it, but as a single mom who just lost her job before Christmas, I need the money. Please ask any questions prior to bidding. Thanks for looking!
