Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack kit made by The Laughing Whale company. This hardworking ancestor of the famed Friendship sloop, were built from the 1860's to the turn of the century. They were the basic in-shore fishing boat preferred by the lobstermen of Muscongus Bay, a body of water known for contrary winds, strong tides and numerous rocky ledges. These sloops were deep center boarders of moderate power. Typically, the sloops were small, having only a jib and mainsail. The mast did not have shrouds, and the gaff was hoisted by a single halyard. Noted for their speed, these handy and seaworthy crafts were used along the Maine coast for lobstering and transporting lobsters from the islands to central shipping ports.
