3 ¼" x 4" Good Condition One Tape "slightly" loose on one side An extremely important historical slide Because of the fact that this 600 year old gate, SOUTH KOREA 'S NATIONAL TREASURE, was destroyed by fire in February 2008 TRAFFIC TROLLEY CAR AND OXEN OUTSIDE THE GREAT SOUTH CITY GATE GATE OF EXALTED CEREMONIES NAMDAEMUN SUNGNYEMUN SEOUL CHOSEN KOREA Circa 1900 The word seoul means "capital" in Korean. Originally entirely surrounded by a massive circular wall (a 20 feet high circular stone fortress) to provide security its citizens from wild animals such as the Korean Tiger (Siberian Tiger, once roaming the wilds of Korea in large numbers; although it vanished from the peninsula long ago, its memory has been preserved in both myth and legend), thieves and attacks; although the wall no longer stands (except in the mountains north of the downtown area), the gates remain, including most notably Namdaemun and Dongdaemun. Namdaemun, which South Korea declared its "National Treasure No 1" in 1962, was completed in the early Chosun Dynasty during the reign of its first king, Taejo, in 1398 and served as the main southern entrance for Seoul when it became Korea's capital more than 600 years ago. It was renovated in 1447 and has undergone repairs, the latest in 1961. Seoul's architectural heritage was decimated by the Japanese occupation from 1910-45 and the 1950-53 Korean War, as most of its structures were built of wood and prone to fire. The rebuilding of the Namdaemun gate will take at least three years and cost about 20 billion won ($21.2 million), Yonhap News reported, citing Kim Sang Koo, a Cultural Heritage Administration official in charge of the architectural heritage division. KING SURO'S TOMB The Buildings in the burial grounds area can be seen just beyond The Gate. Especially the roof lines. King Kim Suro founded Garakguk (A.D 42) as ruler of Gaya and helped to promote the magnificent Gaya culture. The Gaya period saw the cultivation of rice and production of iron, tby playing a leading part in helping to form an ancient civilization in Korea . King Suro's tomb stands as a state symbol of the Gaya culture. According to legend, golden eggs fell from the sky. King Suro hatched from those eggs.
