Nancy Witcher Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879 - 1964) First Woman to Sit in The House of Commons. 1937 (January 6 th ) two page letter signed at the end “Nancy” to her son, William Waldorf Astor (1907-66, later 3 rd Viscount). Approximately three quarters of a page is typewritten, the remaining page and a quarter is handwritten by Nancy Astor. At the time William was holding the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Samuel Hoare. Nancy requests that William pulls a few strings in the Admiralty: “Can you possibly get the following point looked into for me:-Mrs Skinner…wife of C.L. Skinner, stoker…HMS “Eagle” obtained a separation order from her husband in the Court hereat Plymouth…was granted One guinea a week…She has now been told that she won’t receive anything until February 1 st . How is she to live in the meantime? She has a little baby. I can’t help thinking that the Admiralty make it very easy for the men to do wrong! I have been told that the man is living with another woman, but of course I don’t know whether this is true. Do get it looked into please, quickly. She can’t go out to work with a tiny baby. I know you go often to the Admiralty. Do please do this…” Written of “3 Elliot Terrace/The Hoe/Plymouth” notepaper (Nancy’s Plymouth home), with “N.A.” typed adjacent. Also included read more
