This is an Original FLOWN NASA Space Shuttle Frangible Explosive Bolt Section. This artifact was used to hold a critical structure on the shuttle space vehicle. It has the original (INERT) initiator squib that when electrically fired would almost instantly seperate this device from the associated frangible nut. The squib is electron beam welded to the main body with two hermetically glass sealed electrical signal pins. T is still black crystalline and shock residue from the high force explosion upon separation. It is constructed from a high strength Inconel alloy. It reads: SKD 26100098-301 SERIAL NUMBER: 00014 MANUFACTURED: JULY, 1984 This piece came from a lot that was manufactured in 1984 This unit was made by SPACE ORDNANCE SYSTEMS The dimensions are about 2.25 inches long by 1.5 inches at the largest diameter. This item is completely INERT and safe to handle.
