Up for auction is a beautiful item I bought at an auction, one of several old documents. This is an 1887 National Guard retirement document and it's signed by Walter Wright Greenland, adjutant general of Pennsylvania, who was a Civil War hero who fought at Antietam. Below is his bio I found on line. The document is for Theodore Wiedersheim, a Colonel in the National Guard about to retire from the First Regiment. Large document, measuring about 19 by 23 inches. In very nice shape for the age other than it's been folded. Would look great pressed flat and framed. Neat old piece with a great low opening bid. Federal (USV) Sergeant Walter Wright Greenland (1846 - 1895) Home State: Pennsylvania Branch of Service: Infantry Unit: 125th Pennsylvania Infantry Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted in Company D, 5th Pennsylvania Reserves in June 1861, but was mustered out as underage. He enlisted in August 1862 in Company C, 125th Pennsylvania Infantry, and mustered in as Sergeant on 14 August 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: At Antietam on 17 September 1862 "... George A. Simpson, while bravely holding the flag aloft, was hit with a bullet from a Confederate gun, which pierced his brain, and he fell dead. A second man picked up the flag, and he was shot clown. A third, and he fell; the fourth took it up, and he was shot and fell. read more
