Native Copper Egg Native copper is what is known as a native element. (Of the more than 100 chemical elements that make up matter, only about 20 are ever found in pure, or uncombined form in the earths crust. These are known as native elements. ) Copper has a cubic crystal system. As it is more reactive than some of the other native element metals, it is found pure in only a few places. Michigan in the USA is one such place, where native copper is found as a cavity filling in old lava flows, this accounts for the unusual gnarled shapes when found. Mined in the Caledonia Mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan, this is a lovely example of an egg made from native copper, it is a weighty example and measures approx. 5.2 cms x 4.0 cms.
