This is a very rare MINI Sailor's DITTY BAG (found in Maine) that certainly dates to the late 19th cent......and possibly much earlier (?) (think "Moby Dick"). Compared to the larger full size ditty bag in one of the pictures, this one is simply a miniature version....perhaps a "sampler"?????? THE LARGER BAG IS NOT PART OF THIS OFFER AND SHOWN FOR COMPARRISON ONLY).The beautiful early sail cloth weave is evident in the pictures, and the hand stitched seams and grommet holes are all excellent displays of the sailor's sail sewing art as it was said that a man's ditty bag would usually be evidence of his skill set for sail repair and sewing new ones. Although the full size bags would have a sailor knot draw string (also displaying the sailor's skill with fancy knot work) this one apparently never had any sort of drawstring cord...(?)...and really does not need one.The original INK WRITING for the two letter initials ("J.P") has serifs on the letter terminals and is typical (and expected) on early "classic" calligraphy, and is likely the sailor's initials....certainly of a pre ca. 1900 style. The numbers appear to be an addition calculation 10 & 15 = 25 ????? With "cent"????? (hundred count of something?????).Nicely done, great condition and super unusual to see this miniature ditty bag. Would make a fine example of sailor's art for read more
