NAVAJO HORSE HAIR POTTERY Large White TURTLE Fetish Artist: This one of a kinds turtle fetish was done by Betty Holtsoi, a local Navajo artist. Betty is of the Near the Mountain Cove of the Navajo Nation. We have included a photo of her holding some of her beautiful art work on this page. Materials: Horse Hair Pottery is made by using hair from the tail and mane of a horse. It is fired using a special technique. The process is hazardous and time consuming. Fine lines are created from the hair of the mane of the horse. The thick lines are from the hair of the tail. After the pot is fired it is rock polished. Red Horse Hair and White Horse Hair etched/glazed Pottery have become very popular. When firing and polishing are complete, deer, elk, and or stones may be applied to the pot. Every pot is original, as it is impossible to make two identical pots. Size: This Turtle is 3 " high by 61/2 " long. Please note, this is White Horse Hair Pottery. Traditional Background: The Native people of Arizona and New Mexico have been making pottery for about two thousand years. Their ceramics reveal a love of grace and beauty as well as skills refined over the centuries. Pottery is an honored tradition among the tribes in the Southwest.
