Tile on walnut plaque from one of the most famous of the US Navy's fighter squadrons. VF-111 Sun Downers was formed in 1942. Their first planes were the Grumman F-4-F Wildcat and the squadron insignia shows two wildcats shooting down the rising sun of Japan. They fought in most of the WWII pacific theatre actions, Korea, and Viet Nam and were finally disbanded in 1995 as the Navy was forced to reduce the number of fighter squadrons. They were flying F-14 Tomcats when they disbanded. The plaque measures 10 1/2" X 9 3/4" at it's widest parts. The name plate has been removed.
