The Negro A Beast Presented for auction is the original 1900 First Edition of “The Negro A Beast” by Chas. Carroll. The Negro a Beast was written when racism was at a high in America. The author Professor Carroll here wrote a book attempting to prove African American’s are not humans and are an inferior race. Carroll draws upon evolution comparing African Americans to Monkey’s stating whites did not evolve from monkeys the way Negros did. Underneath all of the text is a religious sentiment citing the Bible as a true source of knowledge and would be a sin before God to take in Carroll’s “Common Sense” arguments. Carroll makes the argument that the Negro is not a descendant of Adam and Eve, therefore not a man; but that he is descended from beasts, and that therefore no Negro has any of the rights of human beings and may be treated as a beast. The book secured wide circulation among the poor whites of the Cotton States, among whom its apparent purpose was to create animosity and to promote violence in dealing with the colored race.
