Description This 3D mixed media artwork pays tribute to Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon. In it the controversial "one giant leap" statement has been explored by the artist, Alan Derrick. ARTIST STATEMENT The city I grew up in was instrumental in the effort to first put a man on the moon back in 1969. I have met many of the "rocket scientists" and engineers who did it, and heard their many stories. At the time the entire world was charged with excitement for continued and ever expanding manned space exploration. Our descendants will certainly look back on it as the single greatest event of the 20th century. In this piece I have explored the controversy over Armstrong's "One Giant Leap" statement in a way that breaks from the either/or position. TECHNIQUE This 3D pop artwork features layers of intricately cut steel mounted over a floating panel. The artist introduces visual depth to the piece by allowing each suspended layer to cast a shadow over the next. It is hand painted and signed by the artist to closely match the example pictured.
