Nelly Walter 1901-2001 Vice President of Columbia Artists Management [CAMI] Important Promoter of Artists such as-Leonard Bernstien-Renata Tebaldi-Cesare Siepi-Mirella Freni-Teresa Berganza-Giulietto Simonato-Irmgard Seefried-Placido Domingo....countless others. Born in Germany she grew up in Dresden she worked in the state theater. She earned her teaching degree and was fluent in many languages . Worked as a sectretary to Richard Tauber the international Opera manager and then switched to the Otto Mertens agency w she developed her own roster of artists. In 1930 Nellys life changes when otto mertens died of a heart attack and then the NAZIs took power in Germany in 1933--Nelly Walters was Jewish and she had to flee to Austria then Prague w Nelly worked for herclose friend conductor George Szell. When the Nazis invaded t she manages to flee to France w she met Francis Poulenc[no doubt her fluency in many languages helped her to survive] and many other important music people.Wnen the nazis invaded France Nelly went into hiding in Marseilles but was finally captured and sent to the French consentration camp ]Camp de Gurs]and somehow survived and escaped to the American lines and was employed with the U.S.Army Quartermaster Corps!! the only foreign person or woman ever to do so.After the war Nelly was awarded a visa to the United States read more
