The material is an attractive nephritic jade . The carver has very skillfully incorporated the natural veins to suggest the final sculpted design of the dog has a long tail. Carved lines were also highlighted in dark pigment to complete the suggestion of the carved subject. The skill of the sculpting is also notable. one notices especially the lack of care given the attention to such barely noticeable features as the symmetry of the eyes, nose and whiskers. When one looks closely at these delicately carved features, one can discern the skill of the master craftsman. The Chinese regard carved jade objects as intrinsically valuable, and they metaphorically equate jade with human virtue due to its solidity, durability and (moral) beauty. Many countries boast a jade ware culture, but none of them can match China's long jadeware history. In China, jadeware underwent a long process of development beginning from the New Stone Age 10,000 years ago.The patterns of China's jadeware have rich connotations, revealing strong, auspicious colors.
