Edwin Wilke started Wilke and Co. in 1872. Not having any sons, he taught his grand daughters Anna and Louisa how to mix tobacco and carve pipes. Elliott Nachwalter of Briarworks fame, bought the Wilke brand along with a great quantity of unfinished pipe bowls in 1983. He operated a shop in New York until the early 90's selling tobacco, Wilke and Briarworks pipes. Many of the Wilke bowls that Elliott finished were made from Algerian briar. Elliott closed the shop in New York and moved to Vermont. The pipe being offered for sale today is a new, large, Dublin shape pipe made from the original Wilke stock. I believe that Elliott told me that he thought that it was Algerian. As with all Wilke pipes, the bowl is not stained. I like to call it a virgin briar. I have never owned a Wilke pipe that did not smoke well and I have had at least 25 pipes in my collection from time to time. The pipe being offered for sale is at least a no. 5 bowl in size and it is very light for it's size. We just don't find these "Golden Oldies" around. I have tried to show the very nice grain on this pipe with a series of pictures. Please feel free to contact me if further information may be required for this approximately 50 year old pipe. This pipe will be shipped via priority mail and insured. Foreign bidders are asked to check on shipping and insurance read more
