Nicholas Chapron, sometimes spelled "Chaperon" (1612-1656) was a French painter, draughtsman, and engraver, a student of Simon Vouet and, later, of Nicholas Poussin. Chapron made a name for himself with his suite of etchings after the Raphael Loggie of the Vatican in Rome....known popularly as "Raphael's Bible," published in 1649. In this volume Chapron reproduced images from the Vatical "Loggie" painted by Raphael. The etching I'm offering here is not a reproduction of a Raphael painting, but, it seems, the frontispiece of the volume. The British Library has this description of the impression in their collection: "Title: Sacrae Historiae Acta a Raphael Urbin in Vaticanis xystis ad picturae miraculum expressa. Raphael Bible. The Prophet Isaiah sitting on a throne, holding a papyrus, surrounded by two youths holding an ornament and an inscribed tablet. 1649. Etching." The British Museum entry goes on to reproduce the Latin in both the ornament and the scroll Isaiah is holding....but since I've provided a close up photo of both, I will not reproduce the Latin here. The etching is in good condition, a dark, sharp impression with no foxing, folds, or tears. It has been trimmed very close to the plate line, although the plate line is visible.
