Artist: Nicolas Cochin (French, 1610 - 1686) after Jacques Callot (French, 1592 - 1635) Subject: The Temptation of St Anthony Medium: Etching on watermarked laid Date: c. 1640 Size of sheet: 25 x 33 cm approx. In his 1860 raisonne on Jacques Callot, Édouard Meaume lists three etchings under no. 1414 by Nicolas Cochin that were inspired by Callot's Temptation of St Anthony. It is likely his description of the first plate is the one offered here. Little is known of Cochin, other than that he etched in the manner of Callot, and after his designs. The British Museum owns only one of the three etchings described by Meaume - a smaller, similar scene. A damaged impression, but a rare and interesting print nonetheless. This impression not traced in any public collections. /research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=1581849&partId=1&searchText=antony&people=128984&page=1 MH Check out my other items !Be sure to add me to your favorites list !
