Allen From: Boston, MA INVENTION: CHAIR Invention Summary Part of the fascination of a patent model is seeing the drawings and reading the patent application the inventor filed with each model. 's an excerp from the patent claims for this invention listing: "My improvement has special relation to chairs manufactured of wood; and consists in the novel mode of securing the legs and rounds in position. "It is well known that the peculiar strain, in every possible direction, to which chairs are constantly subjected causes them to become loose and fall to pieces. Joints which might be perfectly secure in any other article of manufacture fail to be efficient when applied to chairs, and the great desideratum has been some means of securing the joints of chairs against loosenging and parting under the peculiar strain to which they are subjected. The object of may invention is the production of a chair which can stand without injury all the strain the wood iteself will bear, and this I have fully accomplished." More Info... Model Size (approximately - in inches): 8 x 4 x 4.5 The Model This is a very pretty model! Note the beautifully turned mahoghany and the fine construction. The inventor claims that "a chair thus made can never be forced apart except by breakage." Well, that seems a pretty tall claim but it's interesting to read his full patent to see the clever way he designed them to be put together. This model comes with an official certificate of authenticity complete with an official seal. It includes the original patent office tag that was hand-written when its patent was granted. Note the faded, red-colored tape attached to the tag. This is the same red tape used by government officials in the 19th century to bundle papers and the like. This gave rise to the expression "government red tape" which is still used today to signify government bureaucracy . Provenance This is an authentic patent model from the 19th century U.S. Patent Office and it is registered by the Library of Congress. It is the only one of its kind, identified by its own unique patent number, and is a rare piece of American history, highly sought after by collectors, institutions and museums.
