The C&NW picked up over 1600 ex-Rock Island covered hoppers built by United States Railroad Equipment Supply, Pullman Standard, and Thrall. Of these, a little over 1000 were built by Pullman Standard and renumbered into three series;88,78, and85. A large number of these cars were quickly renumbered from their original Rock Island series and given a minimal paint job that consisted of marking out the original Rock Island markings with white paint, applying the new C&NW series numbers and a small C&NW herald. Many are still found today in this patchwork scheme. The extent of the patchwork varied among the cars, but it always presented a sharp contrast to the faded Rock Island blue background. Some were repainted in C&NW’s normal green color and some in yellow. The numbers we offer for our cars (752026, 752072, 752164, 752182, 752254, and 752281) are from the first series of cars, and correct for this scheme, taken from actual photographs. We’ve used prototype photos to capture all the details we could find on these cars. These cars are InterMountain ready-to-run covered hoppers with metal running boards and Kadee #5 couplers. As an added feature, we had InterMountain add a side stiffening rib on the top of the car side that was common on a number of these Pullman-Standard cars, and is not found on InterMountain’s stock Pullman Standard read more
