Limited production run of only 250 medals This is the first series of NWA 2986 Coins/Medals Comes with a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY and product ID card. : THE PHOTO ABOVE IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE COIN IN THIS AUCTION This is a shiny "nickel" coin/medal with a photo insert of the planet Mars and a specimen of the NWA 2986 Martian meteorite embedded. Each coin measures two inches in diameter, 4.5 mm thick. Attached in a recessed crater on the front of the coin is an authentic specimen (fragment) of the NWA 2986 Mars meteorite. The back of the coin gives basic information on the fall and is sequentially numbered. Production run was limited to 250 coins. CLASSIFICATION: Northwest Africa 2986 Found in Algeria Achondrite (Martian Basaltic Shergottite) NWA 2986 belongs to the basaltic shergottite subgroup of Martian meteorites that is typified by Ca-rich pyroxene (augite), Ca-poor pyroxene (pigeonite), large amounts of plagioclase (now, shock-formed maskelynite) and minor amounts of phosphates and Fe-, Ti-oxides. The pyroxenes are compositionally zoned, i. e ., Mg-rich crystal cores and Fe-rich rims that formed in a rapidly cooled magmatic flow. However, NWA 2986 is unusual in that the zoning is mostly lacking and may indicate that it read more
