Up for auction are four real photo postcards with the old AZO stamp on the back. The photos were taken sometime between1910 and 1918. They are a rare historical find that depicts a trip three people took to see the Dover Stone Church. I believe that one of them is a local doctor. from Sharon. You can see the car parked and a farmhouse in the distance. Each Card has writing on the back but they were never sent, just probably added to the family scrapbook and then forgotten as the years went by. The view of the brook shows the trail leading to the Stone Church, Another photo shows the grotto opening of the Stone Church and the other a view of w the car was parked with a farmhouse in the background. Just go to the website: /frogs/dst1.htm Buyer to pay $1.50 S&H The Dover Stone Church is a remarkable rock grotto on the east slope of West Mountain in the town of Dover . This location consists of a hidden natural cleft in the mountain through which Stone Church Creek flows over two ~20 foot high waterfalls and through the grotto which is some 30 feet tall by 80 feet deep, at least for the first chamber. Tourists have been visiting this wonder since the early 1800's and t is graffiti carved on the walls dating to the 1860's, perhaps earlier. DOVER was formed from Pawling, Feb. 20, 1807. The east and west borders are occupied by hills and mountains, and the center by a deep, wide valley. The valley is about 400 feet above tide, and the summits of the hills are 300 to 500 feet higher. Ten Mile River enters the north part of the town, flows to near the south boundary, thence turns east and discharges its waters into the Housatonic . From the south it received Swamp River , a stream that is bordered by swamps the great part of its course. A ridge of limestone extends north and south through the principal valley. The principal quarries are between South Dover and Dover Plains. Iron ore is also found in abundance. The Foss Ore Bed has been extensively worked. The Dover Iron Works formerly did an extensive business, but have been closed several years. Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus announced the completion of the County's acquisition of a conservation easement on the Stone Church Property of Dover, in partnership with the Town of Dover . The Dutchess County Open Space and Farmland Protection Matching Grant Program provided a matching grant to preserve this 58.5-acre of privately owned land. "The Dover Stone Church property is an extraordinary natural landform that I feel strongly should be preserved and made accessible for public recreation and educational purposes. The site includes a trail system, streams and waterfalls," said County Executive Steinhaus. "This site has played an important role long ago in the area's history, serving as a destination for visitors and worshipers and as a subject for painters from our renowned Hudson River School of Artists," he noted. The County welcomed the Town of Dover as a member of the Greenway Compact in July 2000. In July 2003 the Town of Dover submitted an application for an award of $441,250 from the Dutchess County Open Space and Farmland Protection Matching Grant Program as partial funding for the Town's purchase of Stone Church property, a 58.5-acre parcel of privately held land. The Dutchess County Planning Board has since recommended that the County approve the Town's request. Grant approval through Dutchess County 's matching grant program will be equivalent to approximately 46% of the total cost of the easement acquisition. The County's funds will be combined with municipal and private funds already committed through the Dutchess Land Conservancy. "What has also so impressed me," said the County Executive , "is a community group called the Friends of the Dover Stone Church who worked so actively as an advocate and fundraising.
