Wonderful reproduction of an 18th Century English Tea Caddy (Chest) hand crafted at Colonial Williamsburg with Williamsburg Restoration and Virginia Colonial Metalworks marks. Tea was so valuable - see Boston Tea Party, Taxes, Revolution - that these were often fitted with locks - as is this one, complete with key. A significant upgrade from an original is the lining of silver leaf, a marked improvement over the lead or lead-based alloys that were originally found lining these.Measures six inches across the bottom, stands about four and one half inches tall. Nice brasses, beautiful wood, t is wear from the brass handle w it meets the wood of the lid. Some small scuffs to the base, but these are not visible unless carefully inspecting the bottom. Very nice conditionoverall, the brasses look like brass; they have that depth that only high quality brasses possess, unlike most modern brass. The wood is deep and rich, and while it does not have a three hundred year old finish, it is lustrous and engaging. A treat for the collector or tea lover, will provide hundreds of years of service with care.Shipping for this item will be $8.50 USPS Priority Mail to Continental USA, all others please contact for shipping quote prior to bidding.
