DESCRIPTION : You are bidding on an EXQUISITE silver necklace that was handwrought in Mexico, circa 1930's to 1940's. This dramatic piece is masterfully crafted in a magnificently classic design that has a wonderful art deco look. It consists of a large and super dimensional central pendant (2-3/4" long and 1-1/2" wide) ~ the top portion of the pendant has a half round rich jet black onyx cabochon that is bezel set in silver and accented with a decorative scalloped border at the bottom. Hanging from the top portion is a triangular jet black onyx cabochon that is bezel set and accented at the bottom with a scalloped border. On either side of the central pendant are long silver swirl links with thick cone shaped black onyx cabochons ~ silver crescent links with scalloped borders at the bottom are on either side of the central pendant and scroll flourish onyx links. The recesses of the designs are heavily oxidized which highlights the exquisite silverwork beautifully ~ the silver has a beautiful rich patina. The links are connected with soldered silver jump rings. The clasp is a tongue and box closure that works perfectly and closes with a crisp 'click'. This is a classically elegant and timeless Mexican vintage necklace ~ it is a very early piece and is extremely well crafted, comfortable to wear and will always be in vogue! A sophisticated accessory for that little black dress or wear it with your favorite camisole or denim shirt ~ the perfect necklace for ALL occasions! A lovely coordinating bracelet is also listed. SIZE : Inside circumference when closed is 16", width is 2-3/4", and weight is 71 grams. CONDITION : Superior vintage condition ~ no chips/cracks/breaks in black onyx gemstones ~ warm, rich age-associated patina to the silver but could be polished to a brilliant shine if new owner prefers that look ~ no dents or dings to the silver balls ~ no damage noted~ just about PERFECT! HALLMARKS : "HECHO EN MEXICO, ACE, GUADALHJARA" ~ this piece was tested by my jeweler and is at least 925 sterling silver but it most likely a higher grade of silver since much of the early Mexican jewelry was crafted of 940-980 silver because it was easier to work with and did not tarnish as quickly as silver. Silversmith ACE and this identical hallmark are shown on page 225 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Please note that t is no Eagle assay mark associated with this artist, indicating that all of their art-to-wear jewelry was crafted prior to 1948 when the Mexican government mandated the Eagle marking system for silver.
