Revised 9-5-07 Please note new photos which are more clear . OLD Hopi Kachina from Hopi Mesa Villages of N.E. Arizona. This is Ka'e , a Corn Kachina. It looks a little different from some Corn Kachinas because of its age and the mesa w it came from. (Each mesa does their decorations and colors a little differently, and uses whatever materials and colors the carver had on hand when he carved it.) The Corn Kachina is a very popular Kachina, a nd dances at most ceremonies and dances. It represents a prayer for the growth and fruition of corn, a traditional staple of survival for the Hopi. Age : Old . It was bought at Hopi in the 1950s and was said to be old at that time. Size : 8 1/2 inches tall from bottom of feet to top of head (not counting the feathers). Condition : This Kachina is in very nice condition: no damage; feathers are intact; etc. A little of the white paint is worn from his elbows (or else that just is the way he was painted). This does not distract, and in fact adds to the old, authentic look of the Kachina. Many Hopis used to tie a piece of string around a Kachina's neck so it could be hung on a wall in their home. This Corn Kachina still has a piece of white string around his neck.
