Up for bid is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP of the Township of North OYSTER BAY , part of Long Island 's Famous GOLD COAST. . This is NOT a copy or reproduction, it came right out of the 1870 book entitled " ATLAS of LONG ISLAND NEW YORK " by BEERS , COMSTOCK , & CLINE. This 4 page map ( pages 126 - 129 ) includes : MAP OF NORTH OYSTER BAY on LONG ISLAND SOUND ... 14 " X 22 " plus margins. Centerfold... pages 127 - 128. with Insert Maps of EAST NORWICH, LATTINGTOWN, and OYSTER BAY HARBOR. This map contains the affluent towns that made Long Island's Gold Coast legendary ...Glen Cove, Lattingtown, Matinecock, Bayville, Pine Island, Centre Island, Mill Neck, Locust Valley, Dosoris, Oyster Bay, Cove Neck, The Cove, Laurelton. Cold Spring, East Norwich, Brookville, Greenvale, Glenwood, Wheatly, Locust Grove, Woodbury, and Syosset. This wonderful piece shows a glimpse of old NORTH OYSTER BAY as it existed 137 years ago. PLOTS ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE NAMES OF THE INDIVIDUAL LANDOWNERS, AND LOCATIONS OF THEIR HOUSES ARE DRAWN AND SHADED WITHIN THE LOT. Railroad Lines are clearly shown, and t are a good number of huge Estates on this map, with many many surnames well known in Long Island History. MAP OF OYSTER BAY and OYSTER BAY HARBOR ...measures 9 1/2 " X 12 " PLUS margins... page 126...backs page 127. This wonderful piece shows a glimpse of old OYSTER BAY as it existed 137 years ago. PLOTS ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE NAMES OF THE INDIVIDUAL LANDOWNERS, AND LOCATIONS OF THEIR HOUSES ARE DRAWN AND SHADED WITHIN THE LOT. T are a good number of huge Estates on this map. The colorful map also identifies Streets , Wharfs, Schools, Parsonages and Churches. Points of interest include huge Estates with the surnames of Remsen, Weeks, Underhill, Adams, Jackson, Chipp, Tooker, De Be Voise, Sammis, Smith, Albertson, Burtis, and many many others.. MAPS OF HICKSVILLE, THE COVE , and SYOSSET ... measures 10 1/2" X 14 "... page 129... backs page 128. Once again, PLOTS ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE NAMES OF THE INDIVIDUAL LANDOWNERS, AND LOCATIONS OF THEIR HOUSES ARE DRAWN AND SHADED WITHIN THE LOT. T are a good number of huge Estates on this map... including such surnames as Weeks, Youngs, De Forest, Heit, Cooper, Koch, Forgie, and many many others. The maps are in pretty good condition for 137 years old . The edges have considerable wear and t are numerous edge tears. The largest edge tear extends 1 inch into the map w it folds on the bottom. None of the other edge tears are long enough to effect the map images. Once the map of your choice is matted and framed, these flaws will not be visable... they will lie under the mat. T is some general age spotting and t as expected, but this does not effect the integrity or beauty of the Maps. I recently acquired this wonderful atlas, but the book is not complete enough to sell intact. About 20 pages were already missing by the time I was able to purchase it. So I am selling the maps separately , and I will try to list as many as I can before the end of the week. If you would like to buy more than one, please know that I will gladly combine shipping... in fact , it will probably cost as much to ship 10 as it would to ship one ! Beers in association with Comstock and Cline was published in 1873. The atlas was originally created to visualize land boundaries to determine property taxes. This ambitious project became the first comprehensive atlas of Long Island and the Metro New York area. The leather bound atlas measuring 15 5/8 x 14 inches has both an embossed gilt cover and an impressive engraved title page. The atlas contains many detailed maps of Long Island and Manhattan.
