I am currently selling items from the estate of an 85 yearold relative. This pair of lanterns was found in the garage of the Florida house. I am definitely not an expert in the area of maritime antiques, but I did a little research and believe that these are of the type used to light the holding area of sailing ships. These lamps have wicks that appear to have been burned, so I assume that they were actually used at one time. These lanterns are quite impressive for their beauty and size. They are approximately 16" tall and 8" wide and 6 1/2" deep. They are constructed of brass, which we have left as found and not polished. They have a very nice patina, and I find this patina attractive. The glass in both lamps is nearly 1/4" thick and appears to be original (at least all the glass is the same). All of the glass is beveled, which you may be able to see in the pictures. T are some scratches in the glass, but this does not detract from the beauty of the lanterns. This pair shows appropriate wear, but the only true dent is in the top of one lantern. I tried to show this in one of the pictures. At some time a previous owner had modified these lanterns, but fortunately not in a way that harmed the lanterns extensively. T has been a mahogany base added to both lanterns by drilling 4 small holes in the bottom of each lantern. I included read more
