From 1944 - 1986, George Bushee was a pipemaker at Erhlick's in Boston. I recently had the opportunity to meet his son, Richard Bushee. Richard had retained his father's pipemaking supplies he had taken with him when he retired. Amoung those supplies were a number of blocks from Greece. Richard continues to be good enough to sell me blocks from his cache. I estimate that these blocks have been air drying for 25+ years. As is the case for most Greek briar, the wood is very hard. Owing to their age. these particular blocks are exceptionally light weight, which suggests a high level of porosity. Needless to say, they are very dry. This pipe measures 5 3/4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches tall. IIt was made from a plateaux block and has no flaws. I did a bit of contrast staining on this pipe to bring out the grain.
