MID-CENTURY TREASURE TROVE This auction is for ONE ORANGE BEEHIVE-SHAPED TRIPOD ATOMIC TV LAMP!! COME see us and " FRIEND " us on FACEBOOK at MOD LAMP!!! Now that most of you are familiar with these lamps, let me share a bit if history with my fellow Lamp Geeks: Please see photo # 9 . There are 4 bases . Each one has slightly different shaped legs. The one on the left has the stubbiest, with flat tips on the ends of the feet. The second one has slighty smaller legs. The one on the far right has the finiest tip, and the pointiest taper. The ones on the far left are the newest ones, around late 1960's. The one on the far right is the oldest , around late 1950's . Basically the pattern is:The pointier the leg ,with smaller diameter , the older . The stubbier and less tapered , the newer it is. The oldest ones were made of Teak or Walnut , the later ones were Pine. These THree current Beehives lamps have legs that are like the second from the right. Not the oldest, but very nicely turned legs. And if someone happens to buy all three, we made sure that all three bases match! Late 1950's. The “Atomic Age" . Man on the moon. Starburst clocks. Television becoming popular across America. The first TVs had a curved glass front. The surface caused a glare from any conventional lamp. Also, there was the Folk Wisdom that one would go blind from watching TV without a light on. Thus was born a generation of "TV" lamps. These lamps typically had low voltage, shielded bulbs pointing up, to create a glow. They created an ambience that caught on quickly. Every home in the US had some variety of "TV" lamp. The Teak wood used in the original tripod legs of these lamps was a nod to the Teak elements of the Danish lamps of the 1950’s. The first style was the “Beehive” shape. The beehive shape was made initially in three colors, white, aqua, and orange . OWN ALL THREE NOW!!! Enjoy the Ambience of these wonderful lamps, and own a wonderful piece of history. A matching pair is SO MUCH better than one. Ask any interior designer!!! As the pictures show, one of the things that is WAY COOL is using CO LO RE D bulbs in them for a variety of effects. The METAL bases on these are in good vintage condition for their age, with some slight tarnishing, but it does not take away from their appeal. Please remember that these are NOT intended as a light source, but rather as ambience. Only LOW WATTAGE bulbs should be used. I do not recommend anything over a 40 watt. Mod Lamp has sold most of the inventory of SIDE SWIRCHED Original finished bases. Next up in our auctions we will be offering the OLDER BOTTOM-SWITCHED bases with original pristine metal, as well as bases that have been PROFESSIONALLY BRASS or CHROME Plated, and sealed with Multiple coats of lacquer. PLEASE SEE SHOT # 10: This finish is Much BETTER than the ORIGINAL !! GoRgEoUS and SHINY!!! Also with the re-plated bases, the wood legs have been re-STAINED and Lacquered.
