For auction is an 1864 Cavalry Saber complete with Scabbard. It was manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb of RI. The saber is in very good condition. The guard is not bent and has a fantastic dark patina. The grip retains the full wire wrap and all of the original leather except one very small place w it meets the underside of the pommel cap. T is an indendation in the leather wrap on the left side which I have shown in the pictures. The blade is straight and has no nicks. T are no signs that it has ever been sharpened. It bears the mark of Mansfield and Lamb, Forestdale, R.I. in a circular pattern, and on the other side it says U.S., and under that the initials J.M. Both of these markings are shown in the pictures as well. The tip of the sword comes to a full point, and the scabbard is complete with both rings and the throat present. It is unbent and has no dents. It has a very dark brown patina. This is one of two Civil War sabers my father had displayed above his fireplace since I was born in the 50's. I never asked him about the history of them, and now it is too late since he has passed away. It is a great piece of Civil War history, and it is rare to find one is such excellent shape! |
