Bond Document between Samuel Wallis and Pelatiah Webster for the amount of 2410 Spanish Milled Dollars, with 1205 dollars to be paid July 1, 1783. Witnessed and Hand Signed by WILLIAM JUDD & JED. BUCKINGHAM. This document is historically interesting for several reasons. First is that it was printed by Robert Aitken. ROBERT AITKEN (1734 - 1802) was the first printer to publish a Bible in the newly formed United States He was born in Dalkeith Scotland, and worked in Philadelphia as a bookseller in 1769 and 1771. He started publication of The Pennsylvania Magazine in 1775, continuing through 1776. He also printed copies of the New Testament in 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1781. Second is that the Bond is for money owed to Pelatiah Webster. PELATIAH WEBSTER 1726 âe" 17 95 , American writer, born Lebanon, Connecticut., graduated Yale in 1746. A Philadelphia businessman, he is remembered for his advocacy in his Dissertation of the Political Union and Constitution of the Thirteen United States of North America (1783) of a revision of the Articles of Confederation by creating a new constitution. He was a Federalist in the fight for ratification of the Constitution, and his able arguments, based on historical and economic principles, were of great weight. He also wrote many books on economics. The document was originally printed during the American Revolution. When it was printed t were references to "Reign of Our Sovereign Lord - King of Great Britian" and "His Majesty's Courts". When the document was used in 1783, at the end of the Revolution, these references were inked out. WILLIAM JUDD Esq. was a Signer of the Ratification of the Constitution by the State of Connecticut in January 1788. During the time of the Pennamite-Yankee Wars, Ethan Allen had proposed a new State named Westmoreland - William Judd was to be the Governor. Of Course, BUCKINGHAM is also an important name in early Pennsylvania. Certainly a settler of Buckingham Township. HISTORICAL DOCUMENT FROM VERY EARLY AMERICA. Meginness' monumental "History of Lycoming County" written in 1892, Wallis was "the most energetic, ambitious, persistent, and untiring land speculator who ever lived in Lycoming County. His energy was marvelous, and his desire to acquire land became a mania which followed him to the close of his life." Among those great holdings, Wallis used 7,000 acres near Muncy to locate his estate anchored by a solidly built stone mansion. It was built in 1769 on the high ground near the mouth of Carpenter's Run. "The location was well chosen," Meginness observed. "A few hundred yards north of the house Fort Muncy was afterward erected and became a rallying point for the settlers. Their home became a haven of rest for weary travelers . . . They dispensed a liberal and elegant hospitality for the rude times in which they lived." The solid, fine homestead played a key role in an episode known as "The Great Runaway." According to historian Paul A. Wallace in "Indians of Pennsylvania," that event in the summer of 1778 followed a "series of heavy Indian raids directed at the Susquehanna Valley above Shamokin."
